As Father’s Day approaches, memories with my dad fill my thoughts, including many rounds of golf together. I am so lucky to have such an amazing father, a god-fearing man of integrity, patriotism and most of all a man of total dedication to and love for his family. Dad has lived his life for his family and the life lessons he has taught me both on and off the golf course have helped make me who I am today.
One of the many lessons learned from my father was to love and respect our country, our flag and our freedom. While he doesn’t speak much about his time in the Army during the Vietnam War, he made the decision to enlist and serve his country. Dad received a Purple Heart for the near-fatal wounds he received during an attack where three of his fellow soldiers were killed. On a rare occasion when Dad has talked about that time, he expressed that it was for his family, both present and future that he fought to stay alive and recover.
Dad is my hero and continues to be a daily inspiration to me and many others. It is with love and respect for my dad and respect for all the service men and women who fight for our freedom, that I’m proud to be a part of the World’s Largest Golf Outing again this year.
On Monday, August 1st, the Sixth Annual World’s Largest Golf Outing (WLGO) will be held across 110+ golf courses in over 28 states. This year’s event will be benefitting the Fisher House Foundation. Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. For more information about Fisher House, visit https://www.worldslargestgolfouting.com/about/fisher-house-foundation.
The first WLGO was played in 2011 and it has continued to grow ever since. Last year 12,397 participants helped to raise $1,024,287 and in 2016 we’re striving to do even better. This year at Sanctuary Ridge, we have both a golf outing and a footgolf outing so that even more people can participate.
How is it possible to raise that money in just one day, you might ask. Well, that is the coolest part of the event in my opinion. Similar to a walkathon, once a team has signed up to play in the event, they can spread the word to friends, family and colleagues and ask for their support. Each team has a webpage that allows additional donations to be made in support of their team. You can add a team picture, fundraising goal and write about your inspiration.
My dad is my inspiration, what’s yours? Now’s the time to sign up your team, or if you can’t play to donate to a team or course. It’s not about your golfing ability or score, it’s about having a fun day of golf while supporting the cause. Let’s come together to celebrate our freedom and those who have sacrificed to help make it possible.
